BBQ and Bixby
Oklahoma are Like Peas and Carrots
When the officials and residents of Bixby, Oklahoma throw a
community event, they don’t mess around about it! If it isn’t THE largest, it
is one of the largest community events that is held during May each year. The
BBQ n’ Blues Festival brings families from all over Bixby together as well as
those just outside of Bixby.
It is a family event with activities for the kids, music for
everyone and all the locals will tell you, the best tasting BBQ around. This
event brings in thousands of dollars to the Rotary Club of Bixby who turns
around and puts it right back into the community in a variety of ways.
Every
year the Washington Irving Memorial Park in Bixby becomes the place to be for 2
days in May for this food, fun, music, neighborly visiting and relaxation. The
Rotary Club puts the money raised from this event to finance things like the
large electronic marquee sign for the Bixby school system. The sign is used to promote the activities
within the school such as athletic events, PTA meetings and more.
Bixby is a
suburb of Tulsa and lays in two counties, Tulsa and Wagoner. A member of the
Muscogee Creek Nation, Alexander
Posey, settled in this area in the late 1800s. Here he started a Posey on Posey
Creek community that included a blacksmith shop, a general store and two
saloons. In 1895, a post office was erected and the town became a government
town site. The name was changed in honor of the Dawes Commission chairman, Tams
Bixby.
